Palestinian Folk Dance, DABKE

Palestinian Dabkeh is a traditional folk dance rooted in the Palestinian culture. It is a symbol of joy, community and cultural resistance. 

Dabkeh was performed while working in the fields or while building houses when people needed to compact the mud with their feet. Over time, Dabkeh has turned into a festive dance performed at weddings and folk festivals. It has become a symbol of national identity and resisting the occupation and preserving Palestinian heritage.

Palestinian Dabkeh has a deep-rooted heritage character and is part of the Palestinian identity. It is practiced today all over Palestine and the diaspora. The Dabkeh program plays an important role in spreading and preserving Palestinian culture in Canada. 

In order to preserve and disseminate this Palestinian heritage, the Canada Palestine Cultural Association established the Palestinian Dabkeh Program. This program includes several activities, the most prominent of which are:

Dabkeh learning courses

where the program periodically offers first and second level courses for all age groups (adults, youth, children).

Festivals Performances

Peace and Unity , Heritage Festival , Mile Zero Event , Bawlin school, Queen E high school , ME lazert High school and many other community events.

Dabke Workshops

Completed in collaboration with the YMCA, as well as junior high schools, high schools, and colleges. Basics of Dabkeh were taught and the participants practiced simple performances.

The Dabkeh program includes future plans including expanding the workshops to include universities, launching a Dabkeh fitness program for all age groups, developing a wedding Dabkeh program to revive the Palestinian traditions, and opening a class for cultural education and Palestinian history.

Baladna Band

Baladna Band is considered one of the most significant outcomes of the Dabkeh program. It was formed in November 2023 as a group that aims to deliver a national cultural heritage message to express the ancient Palestinian identity.
